Dos cervezas por favour
As my tan lines are fading so is the memory of my holiday and as the weather turns from an Indian summer to arctic snow, I feel now is the best time to write my blog about my trip to Barcelona.
Although the above quote was probably our most spoken phrase, I implore you not to judge a book by its cover and presume that I spent the whole two weeks drinking beer on the beach and partying until dawn! Although, not entirely untrue!
When I had a day by myself, I decided to indulge in a full day of Gaudi (didn't think dragging the boyfriend around would be his style!). For those who don't know Gaudi was an architect who designed his buildings with a style that was more contemporary than the 1900's era in which he was born. Even today his architecture stands out amongst its more modern adjacent buildings, and are indeed the most magical and strange structures I have seen so far.
Gaudi's style was influenced by his love of nature and his passion for religion. His structures, which include houses as well as a grand park in Barcelona, are often devoid of straight edges, preferring the curves and curls of nature.
By far his most impressive and famous works are the Sagrada Familia Cathedral - which still has another 50 years at least until it is finished - and his Casa Batllo – a building once created for a rich business man which is now open to the public. His attention to detail is amazing, from his use of broken tiles to cover every surface, to the translation of his style onto wood and glass.
After all that sightseeing it was time for a bit more relaxation and sun worshipping! But really, Barcelona is an amazing city, full of life and colour, much more than just a beach and beautiful weather. I was able to practice my Spanish, eat the food that I love and have that all important break from ODD (much as I love it!)
