Headphones Moment: HIGH CONTRAST - The First Note Is Silent (2011)

As a regular feature we'll be sharing with you what sort of music is finding it's way onto our ipods, into our cars and on our spotify playlists of late. Who knows we may help you discover something new or unearth some forgotten classics …

Back in the late 90's and early noughties when I was a frequenter of discotheques, I could quite often be seen jumping around at some of Manchester's darkest and finest drum and bass nights and a little known underground dj was tearing up the clubs with astonishingly energetic sets. The man responsible was Lincoln Barret aka High Contrast. Inspired by these foggy nights out I set about acquiring any mix cds (remember those?) of his I could get my mittens on. Plastic Surgery 3 on Hospital records was a standout release for me! But as I got older and mellowed the memory of those nights and that kind of music faded…

Recently though, after Jess forced us oldies into listening to Radio One (6 Music is the Open Door Design station of choice), my ears were battered with the usual turgid pop but then, there was an aural epiphany, a track came on and instantly caught my shell likes attention.

An absolute euphoric barnstormer of a D'n'B track, to my surprise it was my old hero High Contrast with his single 'The first note is silent'. Get you ears around it and everytime you hear it, it gets better and better. The way it builds and builds is relentless, so instead of jumping around nightclubs to this track you will find it's now my housework tune of choice.
