The importance of image rights!
In our line business both on and offline it's not uncommon for us to be asked to source an image for a client. We are fastidious in our approach to this as none too often will we be asked to "just grab it from Google images", to which our reply is always in an emphatic "no!".
Image procurement and licensing is massively important, for us as an agency the perils of obtaining images from non-official sources or checking license can land us with a hefty fine or legal action.
I was recently reminded of an amusing story regarding the official mascot images used for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and how the Canadian artist and graphic designer, Michael Barrick (http://mbarrick.livejournal.com/882235.html), posted a re-touched version to his blog including an additional "non-official" mascot.
It wasn't long before this non-official image turned up in an esteemed Polish newspaper using the image as part of an article about the Olympics and other printed publications hi-lighting the impact of the pitfalls of non-official image procurement.
So the next time you need a logo or image, please make sure you get the permissions you need!
